Many studies show that mental or emotional “stress” causes physical changes in the body that can directly cause or exacerbate health problems. It has also been shown that the body heals faster and the immune system operates better when the body is in a state of relaxation.
Biofeedback offers individuals the opportunity to establish control over their stress response and other aspects of their physiology, to create a state of relaxation any time that they need to. Any physiological response that can be monitored is suitable for biofeedback training.
“Biofeedback is the process of recording physiological signals (such as muscle tension or temperature) and displaying them to the person being recorded in real time as they are being recorded. This information is used to help a person learn to change their physiology” – Association of Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback
Conditions Responsive to Biofeedback Training
Almost any physical problem caused by or worsened by stress may improve with Biofeedback training. The following are common conditions that show clinical improvement with Biofeedback training:
- Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
- Chronic Insomnia
- Chronic Pain
- Migraine Headaches
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome
- Poor Muscle Control
- Raynaud’s Disease
- Urinary Incontinence
During the first session, we will discuss your health concerns and session goals. You will be able to monitor changes in your physiological responses by observing them on a computer screen via electronic feedback.
During all sessions, you may practice creative visualization, progressive muscle relaxation, and diaphragmatic breathing exercises. Afterwards, you and the practitioner will note changes in your bodily cues and discuss your progress in producing desired outcomes. The goal is that you will practice this technique regularly at home and schedule only occasional “check-ins” with your practitioner.
